When one's body begins to digest food, it begins with the sight and smell of food, which stimulates the salivary glands, thus causing saliva to excrete into the mouth to moisten the food. Once the food enters the mouth, it is chewed by the teeth and both the teeth and tongue help break down the food into what is known as a bolus. Once a bolus is created, it is passed through the pharynx and the esophagus, eventually reaching the stomach.
