IRAC Case Brief Case Mary Ann Verdugo was shopping with her mother and brother in a California Target store when Mary suffered a sudden heart attack. By the time the paramedics arrived to help, Ms. Verdugo had already passed away. Ms. Verdugos family sued Target, claiming that they had a duty of care to equip their stores with Automatic External Defibrillators (AEDs). The Verdugos claim was initially dismissed at the district court level and they appealed to the California Supreme Court (Verdugo v. Target Corp,2014).
