Using Date Mining to Prevent Terrorism Bradley Sheaffer Davenport University Abstract In 2001 the United States experienced the most devastating terrorist attack in its history and was looking for new ways to prevent another attack of the same magnitude from ever happening again. Two programs were created, the Terrorist Information Awareness (TIA) program and Computer-Assisted Passenger Prescreening System (CAPPS II) using data mining. The projects raised concerns from Congress and the public about the way they obtained citizens private information through the use of data mining. These concerns would eventually reach a point were almost everyone would be calling to have the government end the funding of the TIA and CAPPS II data mining projects.
