US History Task 4 Part A. There were a few major causes that led to the Great Depression in the United States. The new consumerism played a significate role in the Great Depression. The want for the new items caused individuals to purchase things on credit. In 1923 there were 3.5 million vehicles sold in which 80 percent of those being purchased via credit. This was a new expense to them that many did not have the resources to afford. Farmers were also impacted as they took this route in attempt to increase productivity and invested in new machinery, and not making enough profit to pay off the machinery.
