I feel that in this parable of the Prodigal Son Jesus is communicating the ability for repentance and forgiveness as well as to not judge and have a negative attitude towards sinners. The three principal characters are the Father who is symbolic of God, the younger son who is symbolic of the sinners and people who stray from God, and the older son who is symbolic of people who are loyal to God.
