The first Target store was founded and opened in 1962 near Roseville, Minnesota. From there the Target Corporation was founded in 1902 in Minneapolis. It started as the Dayton Dry Goods Company, and eventually grew part of the Dayton Hudson Corporation. At this time target has grown tremendously. It now has grown to about 1,781 stores, located in 49 states, with 37 distribution centers. They are operating worldwide and now have locations in Canada and India ("About target," 2012).
