Understanding Plagiarism Journal Entry Plagiarism is when you take credit for something in your writing that you stole from another author. It is an act of fraud, not only is it stealing someone elses ideas or words, its lying about it as well. Its not that you cant use other peoples ideas in your writing; you just cant claim it as your own. Plagiarism is problematic in the academic world for a multitude of reasons. Not only are students who plagiarize hurting themselves by cheating, instead of actually researching the material they are supposed to be writing about, but also the consequences if they get caught can affect their entire future.
