Current Nursing Practice Nurses running around a hospital is a typical scene. It is said that nurses have too many patients, which is accurate at the hospital I currently work. Medical-surgical nurses can have and usually do have six patients at a time. Nurses that work on medical-surgical units are expected to care for six patients at a time safely. Safely caring for six patients includes passing medications, assessing vital signs(i.e., blood pressure, pulse), assessing neurological status, turning patients, taking patients to the restroom, changing a dressing, assessing intravenous sites to ensure they are patent, monitoring lab values, encouraging patients to walk,...
