Toennies Typology Folk and Mass Society Ferdinand Toennies was a German Sociologist born in the late 1800s. He was a major contributor to theory and field study in sociology as he analyzed the social structure of cities. He became very well known in the sociological world due to his typology of Gemeinshaft and Gesellshaft, as it showed the clear distinction between a folk society and a mass society, and the social wills pertaining to each.
