Creating story hooks is an important step in the writing process. I teach my students that creating a hook at the beginning of your story will "bait" the reader just as you would when you "bait" a fish. This handout is useful and appropriate for grades 2nd through 4th. I like to start out by challenging my students to create a new hook for a well-known story (such as a classic fairy tale). Students can write their hooks in the squares that are provided in these handouts.
