RDG 410 Phonemic Awareness & Phonics Minilesson

This lesson is introduced by using a metaphor to describe to the students what blends and digraphs are. First the teacher should draw a blue line on the board next to a red line and explain that these are simply red and blue because they are separate. This is the same idea with consonant blends. Every sound can be heard with consonant blends, just like every color (red and blue) can be seen. Now the teacher should draw a blue line with red over it showing that the color has now changed to purple. The colors are now together and they are unable to be seen separate they are now a whole different color. This is the same for digraphs because with consonant digraphs the letters are changed to make a different sound they are no longer individual sounding consonants.
