PSY 320 Week 5 Discussion Question 3 of 6

After reading pages 343 through 340, choose and discuss two / 2 of the listed four / 4 concepts associated with the consequences of prejudice:

1_Self-perpetuating stereotypes.

2_Discrimination's impact.

3_Stereotype threat.

4_Do stereotypes bias judgments of individuals?

Self-perpetuating Stereotypes

According to this week's readings, self-perpetuating stereotypes are a type of stereotype which happens when we have rooted ideas of how an individual should behave. Thus, when we analyze that individual, we strive to make that person fit the mold or self-perpetuated stereotype we've already assigned them. This reminds me of a personal experience I had when I was hiking near a wealthy ski resort. It was summer and I decided to explore the area. While hiking, I met someone on the trail who was very affluent. She asked about my situation and I told her I was a college student and at the time it seemed she was using the concept of self-perpetuating stereotype because she wanted to assume that I was poor. In reality, I had a job and a scholarship and I did not give her any reason to think I was poor. It was as though she wanted me to be that way. She insisted that I accept a $20 bill from her and the situation became so awkward that I finally just accepted it.

Stereotype Threat

A stereotype threat occurs when we feel as though we are the ones being stereotyped because we belong to a commonly stereotyped group. For example, if I were part of a minority group, I might have the belief that I am easily stereotyped. It is therefore, a stereotype threat (Myers, Pg. 330).
