Inez Beverly Prosser is the daughter of Samuel Andrew, who was a waiter and Veola Hamilton Beverly, who was a homemaker. Prosser was second to the oldest of eleven children.

Prosser moved around quite a bit as a kid. Due to the lack of educational opportunities for African Americans, she moved to several different cities. Inez family relocated to a town called Yoakum, Texas, where they finally settled. Born into a family of eleven children at the end of the 19th century in south central Texas and educated in its "colored schools" she taught for 18 years, earning a PHD in Psychology in 1933, the first such degree earned by a woman of her race (Benjamin, 2008).
