The teacher held a belief because it was useful information to the students and not because it is true. He did not serve in Nam. However the stories that he told were true in some ways just not true for him, they were in fact someone elses memories. The truth is in what you want to believe. His students believed in him as a teacher. Students even came out and said as much, stating The lessons he thoughts us are valid, whether he lied about his Vietnam War experience or not (Mary Kaplan).
