Erin Potts Professor Shelley PHI 300 October 21, 2012 Four Theories of Truth The Correspondence Theory: It relates truth to reality: a statement is true if and only if it is proven by fact. Truth corresponds to the facts. The statement "ice melts" is true in virtue of the fact that ice does melt, indeed, it is water. The statement "Your name is Doc Shelley is true in virtue of the fact that your name is Doc Shelley. And so on... The Coherence Theory: If a statement is consistent, then it has to be true. However, it isn't that unusual to dismiss something as false precisely because it fails to cohere with a system of ideas with which we are confident are true. However, we can object that everything is ultimately in the mind, which would lead us to state that truth lies within us....
