On Feb 13, 2016 Antonin Scalia, one of the 9 sitting members of the Supreme Court, died unexpectedly. Justice Scalia was generally considered to be one of the most politically conservative members of the court. According to article 2, section 2, clause 2 of the U.S. Constitution, it is the job of the President to appoint a new Justice to the Court with the advice and consent of the Senate. Within hours of Scalias death, the Senate majority leader (Mitch McConnell) said that President Obama should not attempt to appoint a new Justice to the court and that whoever becomes president in January of 2017 should have that right.
