A learning needs assessment was completed in the Case Management Department of Bakersfield Memorial Hospital on December 15, 2013. The results of data review and staff interviews demonstrated employee underperformance is associated with lack of knowledge relating to the utilization process and how to use available tools to aide in the completion of duties. To address the deficiencies of the case managers a four-hour training program has been developed. This paper will present the elements of the training program and a completed lesson plan. Bakersfield Memorial Hospital (BMH) is a regional medical center serving the residents of Kern County. BMH is a 418-bed hospital with an average daily census of 295 patients and the Emergency Department treats an average of 240 patients per day. Hospital services include cardiovascular, orthopedic, neurology, neurosurgery, general surgery, obstetrics, neonatal intensive care, pediatrics, pediatric intensive care, and general medicine.
