1. What is cold stress of the newborn? State four ways to prevent neonatal cold stress.

Cold stress- newborns produce body heat through nonshivering thermogenesis. Process requires increased O2 and glucose consumption to burn brown fat; subcut fat acts as insulator and helps conserve body heat. Flexed position decreases exposed surface area and conserves body heat.

Avoid drafts, put hat on infants head, wrap newborn in warm blanket, limit contact with cold surfaces.
