Mesh, Bus, Ring, and Star topologies - The difference between the Mesh, Bus, Ring, and Star topologies is the amount of cabling required. The mesh topology requires the most cabling, but provides the most fault tolerance. Nodes are provided with at least two connections in the Mesh topology. The Star topology is the de facto standard in most corporate networks, but the central point of failure can cause network outages. The Bus topology uses cabling economically, but heavy network traffic seriously compromises network throughput. The Ring topology provides equal access to the network, but a single PC can negatively affect the network.
