An interview situation in which an elderly woman whom the worker visits shows signs of not being able to take care of herself much longer. The landlord of the building is hoping to renovate her apartment and is starting a process to evict her. (If a student can suggest a casework/counseling situation that he or she faced while in a job or internship, that will make the exercise even more useful).

5.What might be her ability and desire to research legal options to resist eviction and to follow through with legal action or to make alternative plans if eviction is inevitable?

6.What might she be feeling about having to leave a home she has lived in for many years?

7.Range broadly in your thinking—there might be some relief mixed in with the normal fears we all have when we face a new situation.

8.How can you sensitize yourself to her situation before the visit?

9.What experiences have you had when you might have felt some of the same feelings?
