MGT 420 Module 5 Case
As we have learned from the background readings, questions of ethics are often open to interpretation of what is legally and culturally ethical. That is why many major instances ethical breeches in business are often solved in the courts. Still, the ethics of day-to-day decisions fall into the lap of every leader—and often must be decided on the spot. This case asks you to consider some questions addressing the ethics of power, influence and persuasion. You will be asked to consider the question first from an abstract perspective, and then find two concrete examples 1) supporting and 2) refuting your position.
- Choose one question from the following list:
Can the use of coercion be ethically justified?
Is deception justified? Is honesty always the best policy?
Is the use of fear appeals ethically justifiable and, if so, under what conditions or circumstances?
Is the use of threats ethically justifiable and, if so, under what conditions or circumstances?
Is playing on another's emotions ethically defensible? Are some types of emotional appeals better, or more ethically defensible than others?
-
Answer the question with a "yes" or "no" and explain your answer using the principles and guidelines for ethical behavior provided in the background materials.
-
Provide two concrete examples for your question, one which supports a "yes" answer to the question and one which supports a "no" answer. What distinguishes the two? Why is it OK in one circumstance but not the other?
- Write your analysis up in a 3- to 5-page paper. Cite all sources and provide a reference list.
