MGT 420 Module 3 Case
INFLUENCE
Case Assignment
The current concern with health care reform has spawned influence campaigns from both sides of the issue. The anti-reform camp is generally represented by political interest groups funded by the insurance, pharmaceutical, and other for-profit sectors of the health care industry. Many of the proposed reforms are seen as a threat to their current business model, and it is in their interests to try to influence public opinion against proposed reforms.
Listen to the following news reports on NPR which analyze the influence tactics being employed by anti-reform and senior citizen interest groups. Note that some of the tactics being used have roots in human physiology. When you are done listening, prepare a 3- to 5-page analysis of the influence tactics being used. You will prepare this report in two stages.
Stage 1: Listen to "In Health Care Debate, Fear Trumps Logic" (2009) aired August 28, on NPR Morning Edition. Retrieved from
Write the first part of the report, addressing the following questions: What is (are) the influence tactics that are described in this report?
What makes these types of tactics successful?
According to what you learned from the background readings, what results (intended and unintended) could be expected from using these types of influence tactics?
Stage 2: Listen to "Senior Groups Reject Health Care ‗Scare Tactics' (2009) aired two days later on August 30 on NPR Weekend Edition. Retrieved from
Write the second part of your paper, addressing the following questions:
Was this result a predictable outcome of the use of the influence tactics you identified in the first part of the paper? Did you predict this type of reaction?
What influence tactics are the senior groups (e.g. AARP) using? Which influence tactics do you think will prevail? Why?
