SOURCES OF POWER

For this SLP, review the results of your pre-assessment for Module 1:

Particularly the results for personal and position sources of power. Choose one or two bases that you would like to strengthen. Your task for this module is to try to exercise power by using this base. In the next two weeks, try to affect the outcome of a decision, or get someone at work to do something that they otherwise would not do by using this base of power. (If you are not employed, choose another organizational setting, such as a church, club, or volunteer organization.) Below are some ideas for tactics you could use to enhance your personal or positional power.

This may help get you started. You can almost certainly come up with more. Here is the specific assignment:

Assignment

1. Identify a source of personal or positional power that you would like to strengthen.

2. Try to use that source of power to convince an individual or a group to take an action they otherwise would not take—or affect the outcome of a contentious decision.

3. In a 2- to 3-page paper, describe:

 What base of power you tried to use.

 The situation you tried to affect.

 What tactics you used.

 How successful you were.
