According to , the margin of support for stricter gun control laws has narrowed since the 1990's, yet a wide variety of published polls report that a majority of Americans still favor stricter gun laws (). However, Congress is unable to pass any legislation restricting gun ownership or registration—including bans on public sale of assault weapons and semi-automatics.

The gun industry has been able to block any efforts to strengthen gun laws, even though it is a relatively small industry and nearly 60% of American households do not own any guns—a number that is higher today than ten years ago.
