The mathematical relationship between an independent variable and one or more dependent variables can be fundamentally defined by a simple linear equation, y mx b. This simple mathematical model can also represent a term defined as a function, where a set of inputs (x) are transformed through a particular business process, and produce a given output (y). In a function, the set of inputs is referred to as the domain, and the set of outputs is referred to as the range.
