The Current Literary Canon of the United States

It is difficult to assess which writers make up the current literary canon in the U.S at this time, as only time will tell which authors become considered classic or representative of the era. However, there are a few writers which seem to stand above the rest in terms of successful novels.

Although Stephen King is primarily a horror novelist, there are a few works by this author which diverge from his usual macabre tales and take a close look at the lives of ordinary Americans. The Body (Stand by Me), and Shawshank Redemption stand out to me as two works which identify with the lives of average people in America.
