Both "Young Goodman Brown," and "American History" fall into the "innocence and Experience" category of our textbook. Each literary work examines the life a person, whether real or fictional, who's life is changed by a single experience. This change took each character from a life of innocence to one of new experience. In both cases, the loss of innocence resulted in a negative outcome for the characters - a level of sadness previously unknown by Brown or Cofer.

In "Young Goodman Brown," the main character - Brown - has a vision, whether real or a dream, of the inherent sin of people.
