Some of the literary devices used by poets in their poetry are: similes, metaphors, personifications, allusions, and symbols. Metaphors, perhaps the most common device used by poets, are comparisons between one thing and another, such as "this situation is a train wreck". The listener, or reader, knows that no trains are actually involved, but the metaphor gives an indication of the intensity of the situation.

Similes are similar to metaphors but usually contain the word "like." An example of a simile is "the wind is like a knife." This example indicates the wind feels as if it is cutting through the speaker or writer.
