The story The Lottery by shirley jackson certainly took a twist towards the macabre at the end. I have to say I did not at all expect things to turn out the way they did, and perhaps this was the author's intention. The first 90% of the story gives us the impression of a small-town atmosphere typical of America. In this sense, the setting is one of an annual event in just such a town, where the citizens gather together to engage in a "celebration" of some holiday or another. Thissocial contextcould just have easily havebeen an Easter egg hunt or an Independence Day fireworks show. It is not until the last few paragraphs that the reader begins to understand the magnitude of this annual event.
