Leadership, there are many different aspects to leadership and because of that there is many different definitions. A very broad definition of leadership according to (Rauch & Behling, 1984, pg. 46) is the process of influencing the activities of an organized group toward goal achievement. When conducting research on leadership there are three major theories, they are characteristics of a leader, characteristics of a follower, and characteristics of the situation. There are also strengths and weaknesses to this type of leadership. This type of leadership is used daily in successful organization. The three theories get fairly detailed; this paper will focus on characteristics of a leader. More specifically the paper will concentrate on the sub topic of behavior. The behavior approach began in the early 1950's in order to find out what mangers actually do on the job. One line of research explores patterns of activities, responsibilities, and functions of the job.
