Judy Baca has combined art with community activism for thirty years. She is credited for the great work of art called the Great Wall of Los Angeles that has taken place over the years, in which it is consider the largest painting standing 14 feet tall and stretches for half a mile long. She had the help of many young troubled youth each separated into multi-ethnic groups to work together on the painting. By her letting them help with the painting she was offering them much needed work skills. The chance to create this piece was offered to Baca in 1974 by the Army Corps of Engineers in an effort to make flood control channel look better.
