The ICD-10 represents the 10th revision or release of the International Statistics Classification of Diseases and Health Related Problems. Such a revision was necessary as it contains 68,000 codes in contrast to the previous ID-9 which contained only 13,000 codes (Medicaid, 2014, Par. 2). The expansion of these codes was a significant improvement from the old version as they allow for more detailed reporting including included information per code. In addition to these improvements, the terminology for the new code set has been modernized and fewer codes are needed in a single report to describe a condition since "there are codes that are a combination of diagnoses and symptoms" (Par. 5). The deadline which has been put into place for these major changes in October 1, 2014 which implies that doctors and medical staff will need to put into place procedures for the implementation.
