1. Describe Rett syndrome. (3 points).

Rett syndrome is the most common single gene cause of female cognitive disability. 1 in 10,000 females are affected by Rett syndrome. Due to the MECP2 Gene mutation, men are not affected because they typically die before birth or shorty after. The gene is located on the X chromosome and 1/3 of mutations happen in the MECP2 gene. Children with Rett syndrome grow up with effects that effect speech, gross motor skills, the ability to use their hands, and standing or walking.
