Throughout history, human beings have freely used the natural world for their own purposes. This instrumental treatment has

extended over inanimate objects, living plants, and even other animals. We have used the hair, feathers, and hides of animals for

clothing, we have used the milk, eggs, and flesh of animals for food, and we have used the lives and health of animals in

experimentation for medical and cosmetic research.
