According to The Koran, any man or woman found guilty of theft should have their hands cut off as punishment of this crime (Koran ). The American Constitution states that cruel and unusual punishment shall not be inflicted. The dismemberment of the hands constitutes cruel and unusual under American law. Punishments should be a deterrent from committing future crimes, not to mutilate an individual. However, many punishments used by the American criminal justice system are far from being a deterrent.
