ENG 202 Week 8 Final Major Paper 2
Billy Collins says, More interesting to me than what a poem means is how it travels. In the classroom, I like to substitute for the question, "What is the meaning of the poem?" other questions: "How does this poem go?" or "How does this poem travel through itself in search of its own ending?" Given this notion, along with the idea of poems that speak to milestones in people's lives, compare and contrast Luisa Lopez's "Junior Year Abroad" (p 550) and A. E. Housman's "When I was one-and-twenty" (p 227).
Write a 3-4 page analysis (note Comparison and Contrast p 743 & the sample comparison essay p 714) that examines the similarities and differences between the works. Begin by introducing the work/poet and summarizing or paraphrasing then move into your thesis (what is your essay about? what is the purpose of your essay?). The body of the essay should be well structured with strong topic statements that are fully developed and supported with documentation/line quotation (properly cited).
Use the text as well as 2 outside sources. Check the poetryfoundation.org as well as the O'Grady library for additional sources. Include a properly formatted Works Cited page.
Questions to consider:
What are the poems about? Specific to general OR general to specific in scope?
Who is the speaker?
What is the tone?
What is the setting?
What figures of speech (metaphor, simile, hyperbole) are present?
How is language used? Is the diction high or low?
Who is the poet? What is their background?
How is the poem structured? How does it sound? Rhythm?
Where are the line breaks? Stanza breaks?
When was the poem published?
Is there repetition or rhyme?
AND HOW DO THESE ELEMENTS CREATE THE FEEL OF THE POEM?
