Employees Rights and Responsibilities Employees have a responsibility to perform the duties they were hired to perform for the employer since the law recognizes employment as a principal-agent relationship. The employee acts as an agent of the employer, who is the principle, and therefore they are legally bound to be loyal, trustworthy, and to obey the directives of their employer as long as the directives are within reason and not illegal or unethical.
