One objective discussed this week involves ways of teaching students about the concepts of data analysis and probability using real-life situations and manipulatives. Data analysis is the process of gathering as well as analyzing data and probability refers to the likelihood that something will happen or is true. The NCTM data analysis and probability standard recommends that students in grades kindergarten through 12 be able to "formulate questions that can be addressed with data and collect, organize, and display relevant data to answer them; select and use appropriate statistical methods to analyze data; develop and evaluate inferences and predictions that are based on data; understand and apply basic concepts of probability" (Fayetteville Public Schools, 2013, para. 1). Another objective mentioned this week involves using appropriate resources when developing a mathematical unit.
