The student I have been working with is Shawn Robbinson. Shawn is in the 5th grade. Shawn is a transitional reader; he reads at a good pace and has strategies for figuring out words (Pacific Resources for Education and Learning (2012). For example, Shawn knows how to use the dictionary to look up words that he is unsure of and also uses a thesaurus to find other words that mean the same. He loves books and takes advantage of free reading time in class; he reads independently and rarely asks for assistance with a word.
