Cultural competency has been defined as a process in which the nurse continuously strives to work effectively within the cultural context of an individual, family, or community from a different cultural background (Maurer & Smith, 2013). As a nurse, it is important to remember that patients have different cultural backgrounds and it is important to understand where the ideas about disease and illness come from and how these practices may affect or influence the patient outcomes without referring to their own beliefs.
