Cultural competency in nursing practice is the knowledge and understanding of another persons culture, how they adapt and approach healthcare as related to the patient, family and social group. It is the ability to understand, appreciate and interact with persons from cultures and/or belief systems other than ones own. It is about accepting and embracing diversity and being empowered by those differences to provide the best patient care and advocate for the patient the best way possible as a nurse.
