Denton, Texas became a city in 1866 and was named after a pioneer and Texas militia captain, John B. Denton. He is buried near the historic courthouse in the town square. Denton is one of the fastest growing cities in Texas and is on the top of the Golden Triangle in North Texas. To the west is Ft. Worth and the east is Dallas. Denton is on the Bend Arch-Fort Worth Basin, on top of the Barnett Shale formation, which has the largest reserves of natural gas in the US.
