COM 200 Listening Barriers and Their Effect On My Life
SAMPLE
Listening is an extremely important part of any conversation. It is actually one of the most important parts of functioning as a society the way we do. Listening, what is it really? Listening is defined as, "a complex process of selecting, attending to, constructing meaning from, remembering, and responding to verbal and non-verbal messages" (Beebe, Beebe, & Redmond, 2011). But one does not necessarily do all of these things when having a conversation with another person. There may be aspects that are cut out of that process. The listener may be hearing what is being said but may not actually be listening. Hearing is defined as, "the physiological process of decoding sounds" (Beebe et al., 2011). These are two very different actions. Generally, the reason someone may only be hearing the other person, as opposed to listening is because of specific listening barriers. Listening barriers are roadblocks in paying attention to and understanding someone when they are talking to you. It happens to everyone at some point in his or her life and it has happened to me as well.
