I would respond politely and as non-judgmental as possible with a no I cannot lie to your wife. I would explain to Mr. Newcomb as his nurse it would be unethical for me to lie to his spouse. As a standard of nursing, it is unethical to lie or provide any false information to a patient and/or their family. I would explain that given his current condition I understand his need to say his goodbyes to important people in his life but, there are other ways of doing so without involving the nurses being untruthful. As his nurse my duty is to provide as many positive outcomes as possible for my patients, and I would encourage Mr. Newcomb to do some serious thoughtful thinking on how being untruthful to his wife...
