Diabetes is one of the most common chronic medical conditions in the United States. Many patients that are inpatient in the hospital have their admission complicated by this particular condition. Hyperglycemia and poor insulin management can lead to poor wound healing, and hypoglycemia can be dangerous to the  patient. Current nursing practice in most hospitals is to treat hyperglycemia with a sliding scale protocol. This is not best practice. A more precise and patient specific method of blood sugar management would be to use a basal bolus system.
