1) cost - many advocates of open source believe total cost of ownership to be the biggest advantage. Software can be acquired without paying a licensing agreement. Software can be modified, copied, and used without charge.

2) modifications - open source allows developers to tune and improve software constantly. The ability to modify open source to extended the lifespan of the software.

3) redistribution - open source software has no restrictions on how the software can be used. No single vendor has complete control over how the software is redistributed. No fees are associated with redistribution. Disadvantages
