The first question as a nurse dealing with a mother who is reluctant to breastfeed is why? Is it a cultural reason? Knowledge deficit? A medical reason? Or just a choice? It is important to offer the mother a supportive environment in which she can feel comfortable asking questions and express her reasons as to why she is reluctant.
