INTRODUCTION: The deciduous forest biome covers the majority of northeast North America, including North West New Jersey, and portions of Europe and Asia. The average annual temperature in a deciduous forest is 50 F; the average rainfall is 30 to 60 inches a year (T, C. 2001). Within this biome exists five zones: the Tree Stratum Zone, the Small Tree and Sapling Zone, the Shrub Zone, the Herb Zone and finally the Ground Zone (T, C. 2001). Each zone depicts a complex layered ecosystem that encompasses this beautiful biome. Trees found in this biome include oak, maple, elm, walnut and beech.
