Social stratification was mostly non-existent in early food foraging societies. (Haviland, Prins, McBride, & Walrath, 2011, p. 271) As subsistence patterns shifted to sedentary means of food production, social stratification emerged separating the people into social classes. This happened subtly at first and became more pronounced as technology advanced and societies grew in size.
