On April 9, 1865 the Civil War ended. Lincoln was assassinated a few days later and Vice President Andrew Johnson became the new president. Johnson came up with his own Reconstruction plan in May 1865" (ThinkQuest, 2011). During reconstruction, Blacks earned the right to vote through the Reconstruction Acts of 1867 and 1868. African American joined political organization. The Reconstruction Acts also required blacks to have a chance to elect delegates to the state conventions, one-third of blacks placed their vote. Blacks were elected sheriff's, mayor's and prosecuting attorney's. The first black was elected to the United States Senate, and his name was Hiram R. Revals, in 1870.
